  • Villaraigosa’s Comparison a compliment

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Vallaraigosa called the GOP’s 2012 platform a platform from a past century, ridiculing their opposition to Obamacare, their views on illegal immigration, as well as on abortion. At the same time, he explicitly mentions the year of 1812 as a historical reference point.

Of course, this comparison is a fallacy from the beginning to the end. However, let’s have a quick look as to who was the President in 1812 ? Certainly no one of a caliber that our current President can even begin to hope to compare himself with: James Madison, the father of the constitution, the author of the Bill of Rights and – together with Thomas Jefferson – the founder of the Republican Party, who during his life time shifted from his support for a strong national government to strengthening the states’ rights.

Even if Mr Vallaraigosa’s comparison were historically accurate – which it isn’t -, comparing the essence of today’s GOP’s platform to the thoughts and ideals of a James Madison and a Thomas Jefferson should be considered an albeit entirely unintended compliment.
